The parenting website for dads

Robin, read with Dylan, aged 2

Where were you when you read the book?

We were at home in the living room. I suggested story-time and Dylan came and sat in my lap.

What did you / your child enjoy about the book?

I remember walking into the living room after changing another nappy, chatting to my partner about when we could make a trip to the tip, looking her straight in the eyes and resignedly saying ‘I used to be cool’:  I enjoyed the feeling of recognition I got from reading it.

My son really enjoyed the imagery and picked on certain elements / shapes that he’s currently very attached to (e.g. CAR!)

Any Surprises / Feedback?

It’s really lovely how each page literally illustrates the before / after of becoming a Dad – and when towards the end when pictures do speak a 1000 words, I was surprised about how emotional I got reading it. It was great seeing Dylan’s eyes light up on each page,  and regularly picks it to be read to at bedtime now.

On a rating out of 5, how likely would you recommend it to other parents?

5 - Of all the challenges that greet us upon becoming fathers, surely the one that we’re never fully prepared for is the muting of who you were before becoming a Dad - it’s a feeling that is astutely captured in this book and I enjoyed the journey (and sharing it with Dylan!)

My Dad Used To Be Cool

A delightful picture book about a new father who is no longer the cool guy he once was. He looks back wistfully on his crazy times playing in a band, riding a motorcycle, and getting tattoos. Those days may be behind him, but his young son thinks he’s the coolest guy in the world. It is a humorous look at father and son bonding and has a unique bold art style that manages to be both simple and incredibly expressive.
