Marc, read with Talia , aged 1

Where were you when you read the book?

I was delighted to review Pop-Up Peekaboo Unicorn from DK Books as I have an eighteen-month old daughter called Talia that loves both Unicorns and pop-up’s.

The theme of her first birthday party was Unicorn and we wish we had a copy of the book when we were planning, as we would have got some great ideas.

Talia and I normally read books together in the mornings when she has woken up, I find she interacts and listens better on a fresh mind everyday.

What did you / your child enjoy about the book?

The story itself is based around ‘magical environments’ that help children of Talia’s age dream and let their imaginations run wild. There is a question on each page to encourage kids to open the pop-up pages. The ‘life the flap and look’ pages are well made and could probably only be improved with the addition of individual Unicorn sound effects.

Talia loves the Unicorns appearing from the book whether they are behind mushrooms, clouds, flowers, castles or rainbows. Each Unicorn is a different colour and has a different name ranging from Moonbeam (Purple), Daydream (Blue), Cupcake (Pink), Sunshine (Yellow) and Sparkle (Multi-coloured)

The Unicorns have been designed as if they have been made from Play-Doh or plasticine which I thought was a clever tough rather than fully illustrated Unicorns. Children in this age group are likely to be exploring and playing with Play-Doh so they can relate to the characters.

Any Surprises / Feedback?

The whole Peakaboo concept is a winner as we all know children love hiding or finding something that is hidden. To find a new Unicorn on each page by seeing what’s behind the flaps encourages their imagination.

Although Talia never gets bored of reading this book and in this short amount of time I think we have probably read it over 50 times, My main concern is Talia ripping the pop-ups. They are delicate but when she gets excited she attempts to pull the Unicorn closer to her whilst I’m holding the book and this has led to some small damage.

On a rating out of 5, how likely would you recommend it to other parents?

Would highly recommend this book to girls of a similar age and parents who want to encourage interactivity when reading. I would give this book a 5 star rating P.S. My favourite is Sparkle Unicorn

A magical addition to the best-selling Pop-up Peekaboo series, Pop-Up Peekaboo! Unicorn is a read-aloud children’s book that encourages first learning by introducing little ones to colours and adorable characters.
