Damian Amamoo is a dad of 3 children aged 5, 8 and 17, who lives in Sydney, Australia. With his children seemingly growing up so fast, he’s done something amazing with his ‘dad knowledge.’
When most dads see their kids grow up, they are filled with mixed emotions; pride at seeing their kids grow, but also a little sadness that the ‘baby’ times are gone. It dawned on him that ‘like learning any language, when you don’t deal with the nappies, toddler tantrums and constant milk feeds and crying any more, you may start to lose that skill.’
Not wanting to forget those moments, he did something rather remarkable about it. Damian made a course to rekindle and capture all his ‘young dad knowledge’ to share – DIY Dad.
The shift to online
Damian says that ‘writing it all down helped me get some perspective…and even a few laughs!’
Damian first thought he might turn the writing into a book. He had started out the very manual process of writing chapter after chapter, and then found the platform https://teachable.com which enabled him to move the content into an online video course. Not only did it allow him to digitise his learnings, but it also allowed him to create loads of interactive features too, like a fatherhood quizes.
With well-wishers from all around the globe, and dads signing up in the first few weeks, Damian wants the course to grow even more and help Dads to “get the conversation started.”
‘I find that Dads have so much to talk about when they get a chance to open up’ says Damian. With the course becoming more social in nature, he’s off to a great start.
As much as being a dad is a serious business, one thing we were particularly taken by in reviewing his course was just how funny it was – there’s a skit in one of the lessons about ‘imagining pain akin to having your car re-possessed’ that’s comedy gold.
Damian, we salute your Dad Hero efforts.
