Why is the daddy daughter bond so special?

The father daughter relationship is a special bond. While that's not to say the relationship between a father and son isn't special, there's definitely something unique about the dad and daughter bond.

Fathers have an incredible impact on daughters lives - on their son's lives as well. However, when it comes to daughters, a strong and positive relationship with her dad will lead to greater self-confidence, more independence, better academic performance and create stronger romantic relationships in the future.

You only need to take a look these heartfelt birthday messages for a daughter a dad might write, or these father-daughter quotes, to see why the daddy daughter relationship is special.

Daddy daughter activities for baby girls

She may not be walking or talking yet, but there are plenty of things you can do to bond with your baby daughter from the moment she's born - in fact, you can even do some of these before she's born to help create that bond while she's still in the womb.

1. Skin to skin contact

Skin to skin contact is widely recommended by health professionals as one of the very first things parents do with their baby to help with bonding. And it's not just for right after the birth. You can continue skin to skin contact in the weeks and months afterwards.

2. Read stories

Reading to your child has a multitude of benefits, and bonding is definitely one of them. Of course, she won't have a clue what's happening in the story, but she'll love being close to you, listening and looking at the pictures.

3. Bottle feeds

If your baby is formula-fed or your partner is expressing her milk, plenty of new dads jump at the chance to do some of the feeds. Holding your baby close creates a physical closeness, while staring into each other's eyes while she feeds certainly helps the emotional bond - and, it helps to paint you as a source of food, energy and nourishment.

4. Feeding solid foods

The next step in the feeding journey is to start feeding your daughter solid foods with a bowl and spoon, usually sat up at a high chair. You'll definitely need your best airplane sounds and yummy noises for this.

5. Use a baby carrier

baby carrier

The modern dad is one that uses a baby carrier regularly - whether it's a walk around the park, shopping or getting some chores done around the house. Just like skin to skin contact or bottle feeds, the physical closeness helps you both to bond and helps your baby girl to see you as a source of warmth and comfort.

6. Play time

Play time is a great way to have some father daughter fun. Whether it's a baby rattle or an activity centre, there are always tonnes of different ways to have fun and enjoy your time together.

7. Help her to walk

Walking is one of the big milestones every parent looks out for and looks forward to. Get yourself a baby walker to help her find her feet before she's ready to step out on her own. You'll both love the beaming smiles on each other's face as she takes her first few wobbly steps over to you.

8. Talk to her

It sounds simple, but at this age just talking to her, pulling funny faces and playing around can not only help to solidify your bond, but will help her to develop her speech.

Dad and daughter activities for a little girl

This stage is all about creating fun father daughter moments as your little girl really starts to find her feet, learning new skills and building her understanding of the world.

9. Have a sing-a-long in the car

It doesn't matter where you're going or how long the journey is, throw on a Disney playlist or the soundtrack to her favourite movie, and belt out some tunes together.

10. Visit the local park

Visiting the local park is such a great idea for bonding with your little girl, because so much of her enjoyment rests on you. Pushing her on the swings, helping her to climb the steps to the slide, or helping her to feed the ducks, giving her a piggyback- they're all things that make for a super fun afternoon together.

11. Play dress up

Whether she's got a wardrobe full of costumes or you need to improvise to pull something together, role play and dress up is a brilliant father daughter activity. Not only are there numerous benefits to role play for young children, she'll see you giving your all to play with her.

12. Visit the bowling alley

Bowling is one of those family fun activities that has stood the test of time and probably will for decades to come. At this age, you're probably going to need to help your daughter a lot - lifting the balls, helping to line up the ramp, but most importantly cheering like she's just won the World Cup when she just about manages to knock down a single pin.

13. Have a pillow fight

Having a pillow fight will never not be a fun thing to do. The point is, she will love being allowed to let loose a little with something she's not normally allowed to do.

14. Build a den

Who doesn't love building a den?! Whether it's a fort with the sofa cushions or a cosy reading nook fashioned out of bedsheets, pillows and fairy lights, playing in a den encourages both physical and emotional closeness. Alternatively, you could get a teepee tent for a ready-made space.

15. Teach her how to ride a bike

Learnings how to ride a bike is one of the rites of passage activities, and one that will live forever in the memory of the person who teaches them. It also opens up another dad and daughter activity as she gets older as you'll be able to go on bike rides together.

16. Take her to her first father daughter dance

The father daughter dance is a mainly US tradition where dads accompany their little girls to a dance at their school. The first one is a particularly special occasion for you both!

17. Dance around the house with her

Having said that, you don't need to wait for the father daughter dance to throw some shapes. Find a song she loves, lift your daughter up or hold her hand and have a fun time dancing around the house like nobodies watching.

18. Create a secret handshake

If there's one thing every father daughter duo needs it's a secret handshake.

19. Enjoy a tea party

A make believe tea party is probably the stereotypical thing that daughters love to do. So start practicing your best pretend tea slurping noises and come up with some voices for all the teddies that are joining you.

20. Get baking

Bake some cookies or a lovely cake together. Let her choose how to decorate them, too!

21. Take her for a babyccino

Little girls love role play and so they enjoy imitating the things they see adults do. She'll love heading to a coffee shop and having a babyccino with you (and maybe a little cake, too!).

Fun ideas for dad and daughter activities for tweens

Stretching from around the age of eight to 12, the pre-teen stage of childhood can be tough to navigate for young girls (and her parents!). One day she can seem really grown up, wanting to do things you'd expect of a teenager. And the next day, she might want to play some of the games she loved when she was younger.

These dad and daughter activities acknowledge that she's becoming more grown up, while still making sure you both have so much fun.

22. Bike ride

Getting outdoors - however you do it - is always a fantastic way to bond. And now your little girl is getting bigger and stronger, you can take a father daughter bike ride to places a bit further away and explore new places, too.

23. Coach her team

Becoming the coach of her sports team adds an extra layer and a different dimension to your relationship.

24. Go for a thrill ride at an amusement park

Amusement parks are often top of the list for fun places in a lot of people's minds. Whether she's already developing into an adrenaline junkie or it's her first time, it's a fun day out together!

25. Take her to a sporting event

Sport means so much to so many people, and being able to share that passion with your child makes it all the more special. Whether you're taking her for the first time or the 50th, going to watch live sport is always a great daddy daughter activity.

26. Play miniature golf

Who doesn't love mini golf?! It's fun and accessible for (nearly) all ages. At this stage, your daughter is probably getting a decent grasp of the mechanics required to putt, but might still need some help from you at times.

27. Take her to the cinema

Maybe there's a new film she's dying to see or you just fancy going to watch anything to spend time together, the cinema is a great choice.

28. Take her to see her favourite band

It seems like taking your daughter to her first concert has become a bit of a father daughter tradition over the past 10 years or so. The latest big boy band or girl group aren't usually music of choice for us dads, so there's something special about being willing to go to great time, effort and money to have your ears bleed for two hours just to make your daughter the happiest little girl in the world!

29. Do some volunteer work

Naturally, doing volunteer work helps others. But it also leaves us feeling good about ourselves, and can be especially bonding with the people around you. Making it into a father daughter activity is a great way to connect with each other. You could find something related to what your daughter enjoys, or perhaps it's chance to include her in one of your favourite hobbies - or you could choose something totally new together.

30. Decorate her room

As she gets a bit older, she'll probably want to ditch the 'childish' theme in her room and want to go for something a little more grown up. Letting her take the lead (with some guidance from you) on the design will help to encourage her independence, while the decorating itself is a great chance to spend some one on one time together.

31. Help her with her homework

If she's struggling with a subject or task, try to help out where you can (if you can!). Be patient while you're explaining things, or perhaps even try to think of a new way of explaining it. Taking the time to help your daughter to realise she can come to you when she faces other difficulties in her life.

32. Take a class together

It could be an existing hobby of hers, or something you've always wanted to try. Either way it means some quality time together once a week. It could be a pottery class, a crafting class, a cooking class - there are loads of options.

33. Go ice skating

One that that's sure to bring you closer together is your daughter keeling over laughing as you fall over again and again and again...!

34. Go camping

Camping is an amazing way to connect with nature, connect with those around you, and relax. There are plenty of different activities you could do to occupy your time. And check out our guide on camping with children for some tips!

35. Watch the sunset

You could make this part of your camping trip, but of course you could do it any time. Find a nice location and watch the sunset together. You could take a warm blanket and a flash of hot chocolate along to keep her nice and warm.

36. Go stargazing

Whether you camp out in the garden on a clear night, set up a telescope in the back bedroom or take it to a quiet spot in the middle of nowhere, stargazing is one of those fun things that are really calming. You can sometimes be sat there for hours staring up at the sky, and it gives you plenty of opportunity to talk.

37. Movie night at home

One of our favourite father daughter date ideas... Get some snacks in, bring your pillows and duvets into the living room (or wherever your TV is), and settle down for a few hours watching her favourite film or a new release you've both been looking forward to.

38. Go to the water park

Now that your daughter has learned to swim and is much more confident in the water, you can head to a water park for some high-speed, splashing fun.

Father daughter date ideas for a teenage daughter

We won't lie, it can be tricky to find the right dad and daughter activities at this age. Having a teenage daughter is tough. Growing up means that she may have lose interest in a lot of the things young girls love to do, and her ever-growing independence means she wants to do more with friends and less with her dad (even if she still thinks you're a great dad!)

The best thing you can do here is try to shape your father daughter date around her interests. If it's something you're not interested in, or it's something totally new to you, ask questions about it, do your own research so that you can share in her hobby, too.

39. Visit a museum

If there's a museum for something your daughter enjoys, then a trip there is a must-do. It could be an art museum, natural history, war, sports... anything.

40. Cook a meal together

Whether she's loved helping out since she was a little girl, or you think it's about time she learned how to cook for herself, cooking together is always a great bonding activity. You could either cook the family meal or try a new recipe for a father daughter date night in.

41. Film some TikToks together

Let's face it, your teenage daughter is probably on her phone 24/7. And she's probably spending a lot of that time watching TikToks. Maybe she's making some of her own. What better way to show her you're still a cool dad than suggesting you film some TikToks together!?

42. Take her to a fancy restaurant

One of the big struggles of the teenage phase is the child believing the parent doesn't see them as a young adult. There's no doubt that going to a fancy restaurant for a father daughter date will help show her that you see her as a maturing, growing young woman. And it'll certainly make for a special occasion.

43. Binge watch a series

Whether it's something you love watching - or her favourite series, or maybe there's something new coming out that has caught both your eyes - watching a series together is a great idea. Not only are you spending time together watching the show, it gives you a whole new world to talk about.

44. Take her shopping

Shop til you drop. That's the aim of the game here. Although she'll normally like going shopping with her friends, there's nothing quite like a dad taking his daughter shopping to her favourite stores.

Father daughter ideas for when your little girl is all grown up

She may not be your little girl anymore, but that doesn't mean you can't spend quality time together. These father daughter date ideas take into account her busy schedule, whether she's got a thriving career or a hectic home life (or both!).

45. Start a daddy daughter dinner night tradition

As your daughter becomes an adult, it will be increasingly difficult to spend one on one time together. So you could start a tradition to meet up once a month to go for dinner, just you and her. That way, you know you've both got that quality time together in the diary every single month.

46. Lunch date

If she's got a particularly busy schedule, and you can make the logistics work, you could even meet up for a quick lunch date during the working day. It may have to be short and sweet before she gets back to work, but it's something you'll be appreciate and enjoy.

47. Go on a road trip together

We say road trip, it could be any type of trip. Maybe there's somewhere you've both always wanted to visit. The stars may have aligned that allow you both to take that once in a lifetime trip, so take the opportunity to do something special that you'll both remember forever.

48. Look back at her baby memory book

This is the type of thing that often happens when you're having a bit of a clear out. You come cross your daughter's baby memory book and all the housework stops while you look through it, reminiscing about when she was a little girl. But she'll love looking back to and learning about your thoughts and feelings at the time.

FAQs

What are the best father daughter date ideas?

A great daddy daughter date idea is one that helps you both to spend time together, focused on each other and the activity you're doing. It doesn't really matter what that activity is, and it will depend on your own preferences and interests, just as long as you're able to be together in an engaged and present way.

Why is it so important to have daddy daughter dates?

When your family grows, it's easy to think that you need to do everything together as a family. But one on one time together is an important part of growing and maintaining your individual bonds.

Whether it's a fun afternoon at the park when she's a toddler, a weekend camping trip when she's a pre-teen, making TikToks with your teenager, or the occasional lunch date with a daughter whose schedule is jam packed - it all helps to foster that wonderful father daughter relationship.

What if I have two daughters (or more)?

The same thing applies, really. It's important to spend time with them both at the same time, but also do dad-daughter activities with them individually.
