Modern Fatherhood

5 daddy songs that perfectly capture fatherhood

written by DaddiLife 4th May 2016
Songs that capture being a dad

Music is powerful. A daddy song lyric can have a magical way to connect with us not just as dads, but also with other people through all walks of life. At DaddiLife we recently put thought to some of the very best songs that we think capture being a dad at its very best.

Kick back, have a listen, and let us know what you think.

Sade – Baby Father

Special Dad Lyric – “For you, he’s the best he can be / Oh, child don’t you know? / Your daddy love come with a lifetime guarantee”

The smooth and tranquil beat of Sade shouldn’t disguise the serious message of love for a partner and also through a baby’s eyes. Sade has an amazing way to connect that feeling we feel as loving dads through the eyes of a child.

Lonestar – I’m already there

Special Dad Lyric – – “A little voice came on the phone, said, “‘Daddy when you comin’ home?’ / He said the first thing that came to his mind / “I’m already there, take a look around / I’m the sunshine in your hair, I’m the shadow on the ground”

Ok, we admit it – this one is a frickin tear jerker! The song was written with a strong focus for veterans and the military who serve their countries with great pride, but it’s really about all dads being real heroes for their children.

Gladys Knight & The Pips – Daddy could swear, I declare

Special Dad Lyric – – “My daddy was a heck of a man / Yes he was, y’all / He loved us all and we knew it / Though he showed it in a very funny way”

Taking it back to the Soul Train era, Gladys Knight and The Pips shined a light into a young lady’s story about her father who wasn’t always ‘conventional’ in his methods of raising his kids, but showed the sort of love and care that reflects his values. We respect that.

Lecrae – Just Like You

Special Dad Lyric – “You probably never knew that / I loved the way you used to come through come through / Teach me to do the things that men do”

Originally written to show the impact of substitute male role models that pale in comparison to the perfect example found in religion, we think there’s a hidden message here about the role of Dads vs Fathers too.

Black Stone Cherry – Things My Father Said

Special Dad Lyric – “The things my father said would make me a better man / Hard work and the love of friends, a woman that understands / I hope my father knows the seeds we’ve sown still grow / At night I go to sleep and pray he is watching over me”

This one’s deeply emotional that reminds us that as dads, we’re sons too, and you never know what you’ve got until it’s gone – so always remember to be the very best dad (and son) that you can be.
