Sun Safety for Babies: Time to get Sun Safe!

As the Summer arrives, our sun safety game needs to be tip-top to ensure we’re protecting the kids with the right products to have some awesome summertime adventures ahead. From getting the right sun blocks, knowing what to look for, and when to re-apply, there’s quite a few concerns when it comes to sun safety for babies to think about when getting ready for awesome sunny time adventures.

This is especially important as the sun becomes more extreme, making it super important to protect our children with the right know-how to avoid sun burn and the other effects that can cause. In some cases sun burn can lead to fever and vomiting as well as very uncomfortable skin and blistering.

With that in mind, DaddiLife has put together a list of what we think are the most essential tips, tricks, and pieces of general advice for keeping your little ones safe while they play outdoors in the summer heat. Keep in mind that even with all of these tips, nothing can replace simply being knowledgable about & attentive to any sign of discomfort before it becomes an issue.

Here’s DaddiLife’s 9 Must-Knows about Baby Sun Safety:

  • How to get the kids 'Sun Safe'
  • If your baby is under 6 months. It's best to keep them out of direct sunlight altogether as their skin will be super sensitive.
  • If your baby is older and crawling. You can let them play outside. If possible, try to keep them in the shade.
  • Especially during 11:00 - 15:00. During this time the sun will be at its brightest, but also most dangerous.
  • Choose the right protection. Choose creams or sprays for babies, as these are specially formulated for young skin and are safe to use from six months. Use a sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15 against UVB rays.
  • Get a broad-spectrum product. That offers both UVA and UVB protection. Look out for a four-star or five-star rating within a UVA circle logo.
  • Cover all exposed areas. Apply a good plum sized dollop of sunscreen to any area of your baby's skin that isn’t covered up by clothes or a hat. Remember to include hands, feet, and the back of the neck and ears.
  • Reapply the sunscreen. At least every couple of hours and after they have played in water, even if the sunscreen is waterproof. Some water-resistant products may only protect your baby’s skin for up to 40 minutes of play, while others may protect for up to 80 minutes. Always read the labels.
  • Get the right clothes on. Lightweight but closely woven clothing, such as cotton, offers the best protection. Tops that cover your baby's shoulders are essential in the sun, particularly on hot days. Pop a loose pair of cool cotton trousers on your baby, too.
  • Cool factor doesn't win extra points. Your baby should wear a wide-brimmed hat to shade their face, neck and ears. Baseball hats may look cool, but they leave his sensitive neck and ears exposed.
