Working dad’s ‘afraid to ask for flexible working’

written by DaddiLife 24th March 2017

The BBC report came out this morning showing that 44% of dads have lied about family-related responsibilities at work for fear of asking for more flexible working.

Working dad’s have felt this for some time

It’s a pattern we’ve seen emerging for some time, and something that’s now becoming more talked about over the last few months. That is a very positive thing indeed.
The Women and Equalities Committee inquiry is currently looking at how much support fathers receive at work. This comes off the back of the Modern Families Index which showed an increasing number of working-dads being at risk of a ‘fatherhood penalty.’ This is where father’s downshift their career in order to spend more time with the family, often to great expense at a time where budgets are tighter for families al-round.
The inquiry is going to consider:

  • whether an increase in freelance, agency or casual working might have an impact on fathers.
  • whether workplace attitudes about fatherhood need to be challenged.
  • if so, what role government, employers and other stakeholders can play in overcoming them.

Are you a working dad? Now it’s time to have your say

Earlier this year Working Families, the UK’s work life balance charity, published research which found a risk of a ‘fatherhood penalty’ developing, meaning fathers increasingly struggling to balance work with family life. We need your views about this and what needs to change to make that easier. Please can you take 2 minutes to provide your views – it’s going to go to the Parliamentary Enquiry on it, so every opinion counts! Link in bio

We’re working with the Working Families charity to hear from as many working dads as possible so we can together help provide some change.

If you want to make your voice heard, please let us know your experiences through this quick survey

THE WORKING FAMILIES FATHER SURVEY 2017

We are aiming to take this report the the inquiry itself, so every response counts. Please please do take part and share with other working dad’s who want to be heard.

Together, we can make a change.
