written by DaddiLife 12th October 2020
best gifts for one year olds, best gift for one year old boy, best gifts for one year old girl, best gifts 1 year old boy, best gifts one year old girl,

Updated 5th January 2022.

Learning through play is a crucial part of a baby’s development at this age, meaning that gifts for a one year old should, of course, be plenty of fun. But the very best gifts also help one year olds to learn, problem-solve, become more familiar with senses, and develop their gross and fine motor skills.

At the age of one, they may not be pleading with you to have one of everything on the shelf, but with so much choice it can be extremely difficult to know what to buy for a one year old.

Is it educational enough? Will they play with it? Is it something they can play for a few years? Will it be worth the money? These are some of the questions and more that we'll answer in this guide to help you choose the best gift for a one year old boy or girl.

Gross motor and fine motor skills

Gross motor skills are important features of any good toy for a one year old, and the best ones also have one eye on fine motor skills development too. So what are gross and fine motor skills?

  •  Gross Motor Skills. These are the large bodily movements we rely on day-to-day involving the muscles in the arms, legs and torso. They are motions like sitting up, standing, walking, running, jumping. Around the time of their first birthday, a little one is either already walking or will be in the near future. At this stage, toys that aid their development of balance and coordination are ideal, while small balls are great for encouraging the growth of throwing skills.
  •  Fine Motor Skills. Fine motor skills are the exact opposite of gross motor skills. They are the finer movements our bodies can make, using muscles in our wrists, hands and fingers. Things like pressing a button, or pinching something between our finger and thumb are good examples. As are things like brushing your teeth, placing things inside one another, and using a knife and fork.

What to look for in the best gifts for one year olds

best gift for one year old, best gifts for one year olds key considerations, what to look for in a gift for one year old, best gift for 1 year old

There are lots of great gifts for a one year old to choose from, but the best tend to include certain key considerations, such as:

  • Benefits: You can usually tell which toys have the most developmental benefits by the information on the box. Generally, the toys that offer the most educational value detail those elements on the packaging.
  • Age: Many people believe that minimum age ratings are there for safety reasons only - things like small parts that babies could choke on, for instance. And while that is true to an extent, they are also based on the child’s ability to use and enjoy that product. There may not be a reason why a one year old can’t play with a 3+ toy, but they may not have the necessary skills to understand and fully enjoy it.
  • Price: Ultimately, for a lot of parents, price is a big factor in their decision making. In some cases, yes, you will need to pay a bit more for real quality. But you should question whether or not something is more expensive because of the brand or character. You can often get cheaper alternatives that do the same job, or even better.
  • Quality: This is a balancing act with price. You don’t want to spend the earth, but go too low and you could end up with a cheap, poorly made product that is going to break in next to no time. If you think a gift will last them a long time - like Duplo for example - it’s more likely to be worth spending more money on.
  • Features: On the face of it, more features = better product. But that isn’t always the case. We’re by no means saying that toys with tonnes of flashing lights and buttons, and multiple function modes are bad. But remember that a huge part of a child’s development is their growing and using their imagination. Many child development experts believe that the fewer things a toy does, the more a child needs to use their imagination.

   16.     Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Smart Stages Puppy

View on Amazon ▷

Editors Review

“Advances as your child grows into a toddler and develops their skills.”

This could be the perfect bag if you don’t want to spend much on a men’s baby bag. It comes in cheaper than the rest, and yet is both stylish and functional. It’s waterproof, roomy enough and features dry and wet separation pockets. There are compromises at that price - it’s not machine washable and you’ll need to buy separate hooks if you want to connect it to a stroller - but it’s excellent value for money nonetheless.

  • Key feature: Press and listen - each body part has a range of different phrases, songs and sounds.
  • Age from: 6 months old.

Editors Review

"A very unique toy for the age."

This animal-themed set includes a three-tiered ramp with three mini cars designed to flip as they come to the end of each tier. It develops hand-eye coordination, and promotes understanding of motion and cause and effect. The small wheels are held in place by rivets, meaning you don’t need to worry about them coming off and posing a swallow risk.

  • Always great to see the kids' reactions as they watch the racers hurtle down the racetrack.

Editors Review

"Encourages baby to learn the different sounds made by each part, rather than electronically creating different sounds regardless of where it’s hit."

This is a brilliant, durable and ethically-sourced wooden drum and beater that introduces music and encourages creativity and hand-eye coordination skills. The slits cut into the top of the drum allow it to make a different sound depending on where it is hit, setting it aside from cheaper, plastic alternatives.

  • Key feature: Hit different parts of the drum to make a new sound.
  • Age from: 12 months old.

PROS

  • Excellent drum build quality with a hard wearing varnish.
  • Unlike other drums, this one actually makes a rather nice sound.

  • Age from: 6 months (This is a rough guide, as the ability to hold their head up comfortably without any support is more important than age).

  • Easy to assemble straight out of the box.
  • An all in one activity centre so you can get a few minutes piece.
