Why is the father-son relationship so special?

Of course, the father-daughter bond is something special in its own right. But the father-son bond holds something different.

Guidance

A father plays a vital role in shaping his son into the man he will become in the future. There are studies highlighting the importance of fathers to their sons. They show that boys who grow up with a close bond with their father have greater control of their own lives - they perform better at school, and have more motivation in life.

Legacy

Throughout history, men have typically wanted boys to be their heir - the story of Henry VI might be an exaggerated example, but it does illustrate a man's desire for a male heir. A son to take his throne (or place as head of the family for non-royal households), to continue his legacy and name.

And while the reasons for wanting a male heir are very different because of the modern society we live in, some would still argue that men want to have at least one boy for many of the same reasons - to continue their name and legacy.

Interests

The debate between gender stereotypes being natural or nurtured has raged for decades, and is unlikely to be settled any time soon. However, many men find that they share similar interests with their sons and it gives them plenty of natural opportunities to spend quality time together.

Take me and my son for example...

Without actively trying to push things on him, he's loved playing cars from a young age, just like I did. He loves all kinds of sports and plays football just like I did, and he's into things like superheroes, Star Wards and Pokemon, just like I was.

He's only six, but when I think about the day trips we've had just me and him in recent years, we've gone to things like the Formula E grand prix, a track cycling competition, London Athletics Meet at the Olympic Stadium, the Silverstone Grand Prix museum, his first Chelsea football match, and we've got more lined up in the coming months!

Father-son activities for baby boys

As a new father, many men find it difficult to bond with their newborn baby. So much is typically geared towards the mother, leaving many to feel left out. But there is certainly more awareness now than ever before of how important it is for a new dad to bond with his new baby.

With that in mind, here are some brilliant ways to kick-off father-son bonding from the very start of your relationship together.

1. Skin-to-skin contact

Health professionals recommend skin-to-skin contact between new parents and their baby, suggesting it is one of the most effective ways to build a bond. And while most tend to think of it as something to do in the immediate aftermath of birth, it's something you can do in the weeks and months afterwards.

2. Read

Book reading during pregnancy is a great way of building your bond before your son is even born. By the time he arrives, he'll already recognise and find comfort in your voice. But there's no need to stop once he's born - cuddle him close and read away. Obviously, at this age, it's no so much the story that counts, but the close physical contact between you.

3. Feeding

Whether your partner expresses milk or your baby is formula-fed, loads of dads love getting involved in feeds. The physical contact, looking into each other's eyes and making you a source of food all help to build a beautiful relationship. Plus, it helps to give mum a rest!

If your partner exclusively breastfeeds, you can still get involved when it comes to introducing solid foods. It can be a source of great one-on-one time for you both as your boy explores the next steps of his food journey.

4. Baby wearing

Using a baby carrier was arguably one of the first big changes in how the modern-day dad became more 'hands-on' in their role. Strapping your son to your chest while you take a walk to the park, do the food shop or just get some stuff done around the house is a great way to bond. It offers your son comfort and warmth, often helping them to go to sleep.

5. Walking

Do yourself and get a baby walker to kick-start his journey to learning to walk. It's a wonderful way to encourage father son bonding as he tries desperately to reach the safety of your arms.

6. Talk

Sit your boy on your lap and bounce him on your knee, or lay down on his play mat with him and just talk away, pulling funny faces. Not only will it help to entertain him and encourage a few giggles, it will help solidify your position as a source of fun and help to develop his speech over time.

7. Visit a baby group

There are more and more dad-only baby groups popping up all over the place, and 'normal' baby groups are making a much greater effort to make dads feel welcome. It's a great opportunity to get out the house with your son, and play and sing and laugh together.

If you can't find one local to you, why not start it yourself?!

Brilliant father-son activities for a young son

These activities might seem pretty broad - that's because we're looking at father-son activities from the toddler phase right up to the time they turn seven or eight years old.

8. Jump in muddy puddles

The great outdoors is a wonderful place to spend quality time together and grow your bond. And what better way to do that than donning your wellies and waterproofs, heading to a nearby park and finding the muddy puddles to make the biggest splashes you possibly can.

Of course, young boys love splashing themselves but they also look on in amazement as you jump in!

9. Visit the library

We know that reading is both really great for development and really great for bonding. So why not take a trip to your local library and let your son pick out a few books for himself? You could even do some reading in a little nook while you're there!

10. Push him on the swings

Sometimes it's the simplest things that help foster a relationship in the most delightful ways. There's nothing like heading to a local park, popping your son on the swing and pushing him over and over again.

Something I did when my boy was younger (and his legs were much shorter!) was to push him from the front - it meant I got to see the beaming smile on his face the whole time.

11. Pull out your old toys

Head to the attic and grab the box of toys from when you were little. The franchises that were around when we were kids are doing the round again... superheroes, Star Wars, Pokemon. Watch his eyes light up as you reveal the treasure trove of toys you used to play with.

12. Take him to his first sporting event

There's nothing like taking your son to his first sporting event, especially if it's something you did a lot with your dad when you were younger. It's something I got to do recently - having spent more than 25 years going to football matches with my dad, I took my son to his football match.

It was a really emotional day - I have great memories of going when I was his age but now, being there with my own son was so special. The feeling when he hugged me tightly when our team scored is something I'll hold with me for the rest of my life.

13. Pass on your sports jersey

If you've kept hold of the sports jerseys you had when you were a kid, this might be a great time to pass it onto your son. He'll love having his own team jersey and you'll love seeing your boy in something that was once yours. Maybe the first live sports event is the perfect opportunity to hand it over...

14. Coach his sports team

This is something else from my childhood. My dad coached my football team when I started playing, and I remember feeling so proud that my dad was the coach. As soon as the opportunity presented itself, I jumped at the chance. Being an important part of one of his favourite hobbies has definitely brought us closer together.

15. Teach him to ride a bike

Learning to ride a bike is one of those milestone life skills that (almost) all of us go through. As we get older, we remember who taught us to ride a bike and often feel so thankful to them. The great thing is that teaching him to ride a bike opens up some new outdoor father son activities, as you can now start to go on bike rides together.

16. Build a den or a treehouse

Everyone loves a den. I've never come across anyone who doesn't love a den. Whether it's a fully-fledged treehouse, a teepee tent, or one tentatively put together using sofa cushions and bedsheets, dens are a great for creating a small, safe place for reading comic books or playing dinosaur toys.

17. Visit the bowling alley

Although this is something you may well do for years to come, there's something brilliant about taking younger kids bowling. It's probably because they need so much help; help to move the ramp into place, help to lift the ball, and help to do the 'big big push'. Oh, and you'll definitely feel that father and son bond when he turns out to scream in delight after knocking down a couple of pins!

Obviously it's a great activity for the whole family, but keep it in mind for those father-son dates, too!

18. Go for a regular father-son haircut

Probably one of the more 'traditional' father-son bonding activities, going to the barber shop is something dads and their sons have been doing for generations. Plus, plenty of barbers do a 'dad and lad' offer, which helps your bank account.

19. Make a secret handshake

All father-son duos need their own secret handshake. Something that's just for you and him. No one else.

20. Cook breakfast

There's something about cooking that is a wonderful bonding experience, regardless of whether it's between two romantic partners, a father and son, or friends. You can make it a super fun breakfast, and you could even make it for the rest of the family.

21. Visit the zoo or farm

Kids love animals. It's as simple as that. So get to your nearest farm, zoo or animal sanctuary. And don't forget to take the opportunity to feed animals if you can! There might even be the chance for him to do some horseback riding!

22. Build a model rocket

Science experiments also work wonders on kids. They become utterly fascinated. For younger boys, you can certainly take an easier option, whereas older boys might appreciate a more detailed and tricky model. In fact, you could combine your model-making with the classic outdoor experiment that sees you launch a rocket into the air.

23. Play board games

Board games are a great way of spending time together indoors, free from the distractions of technology. And you'll never be short of a good game to play!

24. Take him to the cinema for the first time

Kids love going to the cinema for the first time. Whether it's the snack bar, reclining chairs (if your theatre has them) or the huge screen, it's all super exciting!

Some cinemas will often show short films for a cut price for younger children as a way of introducing them to the cinema without the expectation that they sit there for 90 minutes or longer.

25. Teach him to skate

If you were bit of a sk8er Boi back in the day, the chances are you'll want to get your son on a board as soon as he starts walking. Once he's comfortable on the board at home, you can take him to the local skate park to practice his skills.

Fun ideas for father-son activities with a tween boy

There's some debate about exactly when the 'tween' phase starts. Some suggest it starts as early as seven or eight, while others argue that it starts later around the ages of nine or 10. But the thing that everyone agrees on is that it goes right up to their 13th birthday.

It can be a tricky phase to navigate as a parent, because in some ways your son is growing up so quickly (and is probably feeling some societal pressure to grow up), but in others he still holds an interest in some of the things we might associate with younger kids.

26. Play video games

This generation of dads grew up playing computer games (I certainly did!), so it's only natural that it gets added to your list of father-son activities. A lot of dads start off by giving their child the spare controller so that they think they're playing, but before long you'll probably be amazed by how quick they pick up the skills required to play properly.

Any chance we get at home, my son is pleading with me to play computer games with him.

27. Go on a camping trip

Although technology can help us bond with others, too much can lead us in the other direction. There really is nothing like the great outdoors in providing quality time together, which is why a father-son camping trip is one of our favourite ideas.

Just you and him, no tech, just the beautiful world to explore together. What more could you want?!

Depending on his age, you could use the trip to introduce practical knowledge and survival skills; things like how to pitch a tent, how to make a fire (safely!!) or how to tie a knot. It's well documented that learning certain skills also helps with a lot of boy's self confidence.

Check out our guide on camping with children for more information and advice.

28. Go on a hike

This is something you could do as part of your camping trip or on its own. The reasons are pretty much the same as camping - it's the two of you spending time together outside in the natural world.

Even if hiking doesn't sound the most enthralling activity to your son, there are plenty of ways to make it an appealing, fun day. For younger boys, you could incorporate a nature hunt, and for someone a little older, you could teach him navigation skills and have him lead the way.

We've got a guide on hiking with kids, as well!

29. Go stargazing

Another one you could build into camping or do as a separate activity. Whether it's done from the bedroom window, the back garden or the middle of nowhere, stargazing is fantastic. It's typically a fairly slow activity, so while it's a great way to look beyond our fascinating world, there's also plenty of opportunity for great conversations.

If you need a telescope to get you started, we've got a buying guide for you!

30. Play catch

You could easily do this at a younger age, but by this age he should have some pretty decent throwing and catching skills. People often find that they start to talk when they're doing outdoor sport together. You might have noticed your son engage will you a bit less at this age, so finding an opportunity to spend time and talk is really important. And a simple game of catch is a wonderful way to do that.

31. Take him to his first concert

If your son has a favourite band or favourite artist, and you've got the opportunity to take him to his first ever concert, grab that opportunity with both hands!

Admittedly, they're usually daughters rather than sons, but the videos of dads taking their kids to their first concerts are so heartwarming. Especially when the dad is really getting into it, and his kid(s) are watching him thinking 'I have the best dad in the world'.

And hey... plenty of young boys are Swifties, too!

32. Redecorate his room together

Most children start to lose a bit of interest in some of their childhood hobbies around this age - or they might still love that hobby, but feel it's a bit childish to have their bedroom covered in it. So they might well want to redecorate their room for something a little more grown up.

You could do the whole thing together, from planning to buying supplies and doing the work. It's more great life skills for a dad to teach his son!

33. Help him with homework

If your son is struggling with some homework, ask where you can help (if you're able to, that is. I can't remember half of what I learned in school!). Remember, you're not trying to do it for him, but supporting him to find the right answers himself.

34. Have a Nerf gun battle

Build your bases (we're thinking sofa cushion forts and bedroom bases) and load up your nerf guns for the ultimate father-son battle!

35. Go swimming

If he's spent plenty of time in the water, he should be pretty confident by now. Whether it's a local pool or a water park, it's a great chance for him to show off his skills, jumping into the pool (if rules allow!), holding his breath underwater, or doing flips underwater. Plus you can both go whizzing down the fastest, craziest, winding slides!

36. Amusement park

If your son is bit of a thrill seeker, a day out at an amusement park is a winner of a father-son activity. Plus, you can always head to the arcade for a bit of healthy competition!

37. Movie night at home

We tend to think of movie nights as family time, but there's no reason it can't be a father-son activity, especially if there's a certain movie genre or franchise you both love more than anyone else in the family.

Grab the popcorn or your favourite snack, dim the lights and enjoy!

Father-son bonding activities for a teenage son

Life with a teenager son is tough. Not only is he experiencing a whole host of hormonal changes, but he's losing interest on some of the things he used to love, finding and developing new passions, and finding his place in the world.

It's hard to find ways of spending quality time with your children at this age. They're finding their independence, wanting to devote their time to new interests (which you may know absolutely nothing about) and spending time with friends. You still want to spend time together as father and son, but you equally don't want to run the risk of forcing your teenage son to do something and run the risk of him thinking it (and you) are lame.

It's best to focus on his interests. If he loves fine art, take him to an art museum, even if it's not your thing. And do your best to engage on the trip.

38. Learn a new skill together

Learning a new skill is incredibly bonding. Starting from scratch allows you to grow and progress together, and help each other. There's no doubt that your son will love giving his dad a few pointers if he picks it up a little quicker than you. It could be a mixed martial arts class, a cooking class, woodwork, painting... anything you want, as long as you do it together.

39. Go on a fishing trip

If you've got a teenage boy who doesn't talk to you too much anymore, get him out on a fishing trip. There's something about fishing, sitting out by the water all day, that triggers something in a teenager to talk and laugh with his dad like he hasn't done in a long, long time.

40. Volunteer together

Although the main reason to volunteer is to help others, it's also leaves us with a warm, fuzzy feeling and can be particularly bonding for people who volunteer together. It's a great idea to let him choose the activity or type of volunteering, too.

41. Talk about what it means to be a man

As you and your son get older, you'll probably find yourself having more and more deep conversations. And 'what is means to be a man' is one you should definitely have. It might be an ongoing conversation rather than a one-off thing, but in an era where the role of a man is changing so dramatically, you son might be struggling with identifying the type of man he wants to be.

It's your job to guide your son in the right direction, but perhaps more importantly, show him that you're someone he can always come to if ever he has a problem or is struggling with something.

42. Teach him how to fix a car (if you know how to!)

It's a stereotypically male thing to learn some of the basics of fixing a car. No one is expecting you to be an ace mechanic, but, if you know how, fixing a car is one of those life skills that dads love to pass onto their sons.

And you'll take extra pride years down the line when you son fixes something, someone asks him 'where did you learn that?', and he replies 'My dad taught me'

43. Teach him how to BBQ

There's something so inherently 'dad' about a BBQ. Maybe it's our caveman instinct to make fire and provide food for our family.

Whatever the reason, dads loves a BBQ. And so it's an essential life skill to pass onto your son. In time, when he's got a house and family of his own, he'll become the family's head BBQer. It's your job to prepare him for that responsibility!

44. Binge a series

Maybe it's the latest series of something you love watching together, or his favourite series and you're desperate to spend a bit of time with him, or perhaps the trailer for something totally new caught the eyes of you both. Watching a series together is brilliant because you're obviously spending time together watching it, but you then a new subject to talk about at other times.

45. Go on a road trip

One of my favourite trips was for my 17th birthday. Me, my dad and my older brother drove from Wales in Scotland in heavy snow to watch a rugby game. Every part of that weekend was great and it's one we still talk about more than 15 years later!

That trip was a surprise for my birthday, you could definitely plan your road trip together!

Father-son activities for when he's a grown man

Becoming an adult is a funny thing. You soon realise all the life lessons your parents tried to teach you actually make sense, and you start to love the things they tried getting you to do when you were younger.

I would constantly deny invitations to go outdoors when I was younger, always preferring to stay indoors and play video games. Now don't get me wrong, I still love video games, but I take so much joy and relaxation from being outdoors as an adult and a parent myself.

46. Take him for his drink (legal) drink

Okay, we'll level with you. There's a big possibility that he'll want to go for his first drink of alcohol with his friends. Whether he's turning 18 in the UK or 21 in the US, he's now a grown man and it doesn't make it any less special the first time you take him. Plus, it means you can now add 'go to the pub' to your list of father-son activities.

47. Watch the game

There's nothing like watching sporting events with your son at home with a couple of drinks. It's even better if you've got a man cave to do it in...!

48. Visit the barber shop

I know we included this one earlier, but it's definitely something we think you should continue doing with your son as you both get older. Hairdressers are increasingly becoming places where men open up about their feelings and their mental health. This is particularly important as you both navigate new lives as you grow older.

49. Talk about what it means to become a father

At some during these years, your son may well become a father himself. During the pregnancy, and in the months and years that follow, he will almost certainly come to you for advice on preparing for fatherhood. This is the time to recall everything you've learned over the past few decades and pass it onto your son as he becomes a first-time father. This is your chance to cement your place as a 'wise old man'.

50. Play golf

Despite the best efforts of the sport's governing bodies, golf seems to be on of those sports you fall in love with when you get a bit older. Now he's an adult himself, maybe he can think of no better way to spend his Saturday afternoon than driving around the beautiful countryside in a golf buggy with his dad as you both slice your shots into the bunker.

After your final putts on the 18th green, the scorecards don't matter. What matters is the shake of hands between a father and son followed by an acknowledging look that says 'that was a great couple of hours'.

FAQs

How do I encourage father son bonding?

Your son's age will definitely impact how easy it is. Younger boys will jump at the chance of spending some time with their dad, whatever the activity is. As they get older, however, things take a turn as they find their independence and new interests. Try to engage with his interests, rather than forcing him into something just because you want to spend time with him.

Are outdoor father-son activities better than indoor ones?

Any father-son activity is great for bonding. But we'd certainly argue that outdoor activities are a bit better - there are far fewer distractions when you're outdoors and it allows you both to focus on the activity at hand and engage with each other.
