Where were you when you read the book?
Raife has had this book everywhere. Chilling in the living room, while we’re eating dinner, on car journeys and he’s even taken it on a couple of sleepovers with relatives.
What did you / your child enjoy about the book?
Raife first got into jokes when he was four years old. However, they were pretty nonsensical… “Why did the elephant cross the road? Because poo.” That sort of thing. While the jokes didn’t make sense, he fell in with the idea of telling jokes and making people laugh, and he clearly understood the basic structures of different jokes.
We bought him ‘Awesome Jokes That Every 5 Year Old Should Know!’ and he absolutely loved it. We expected nothing less. He would sometimes ask to the turn of the TV, stand in front of the room, and read and deliver as many as he could. So, once those jokes were well worn out, I jumped at the chance to getting ‘Awesome Jokes That Every 6 Year Old Should Know!’ to review.
First and foremost, Raife was thrilled to have a host of new jokes to add to his repetoire. Secondly, he actually recognised that he was learning a lot from the books, too. Whereas a year ago we were getting jokes that made no sense, now Raife is reading jokes he perhaps might not understand fully. There were plenty of occasions where he needed help sounding out a word he didn’t recognise, or questions he had about certain aspects of a joke. I remember sitting in the car, listening to him rattle off a series of five or six jokes, but ask questions each and every one. He gasped suddenly and said, “Daddy, I’m learning lots of new things from these jokes!”
As a parent, it’s been fantastic to see him enjoy the book so much. And, to see him challenged in his reading and understanding of the world.
Any Surprises / Feedback?
I’ll admit, I found some of them surpassed my expectations. You know the drill when your child is telling jokes – you laugh a little harder than you would if an adult told it. But there were some that genuinely had me laughing away.
Raife was also a big fan of the illustrations. You perhaps wouldn’t expect a jokes book to be filled with so many great images that help to really bring the jokes to life for the young readers.
On a rating out of 5, how likely would you recommend it to other parents?
Five out of five. If your child is in any way interested in telling jokes, they will absolutely love it. If not, I'm pretty confident it will spark a love of jokes.
