Where were you when you read the book?
Eden loved reading this one sat on my lap, whether it was on the sofa, on the living room floor, or in her bedroom.
It was certainly one of her more excitable books so it wasn’t often used as a bedtime story.
What did you / your child enjoy about the book?
I think the main reason Eden loved this book so much is because she would get so animated. The first time I read it to her, I would face palm when saying ‘Oh no, George!’. It quickly led to her copying me face palming or throwing her hands up in the air as she shouted ‘Oh no, George!’ and burst into a fit of laughter. I’m sure you can understand why this wasn’t a bedtime story…
She also loved the illustrations. They’re quite unique relative to the books she already has, so she paid particular attention to them on the first few readings. She really enjoyed pointing out different things on each picture.
Much to my surprise, Eden also grasped the meaning of the book quite quickly, too. Of course, she didn’t understand the metaphor of George being a troublesome toddler. But after the first reading, we talked about the book and how George wanted so hard to be a good boy but couldn’t help himself sometimes. After that, Eden would sometimes add a bit more to the story once a page was finished, saying “George wants to be a good boy” and “But he couldn’t be a good boy” after he’d done something wrong.
Any Surprises / Feedback?
My only surprise is just how much she loved it. Eden loves books, but this was such a huge hit.
On a rating out of 5, how likely would you recommend it to other parents?
Five out of five. It's a Book Trust pick, so you know it's going to be good.
