9 easy ideas for dad to master the breakfast feed

written by DaddiLife 12th May 2016

Getting our kids to eat breakfast, let alone eat healthy, can be a daily struggle, especially when it comes to introducing solids and weaning your toddler off baby food. Every dad has experienced the dreaded breakfast war at least once. Here are 9 tips, tricks and hacks to help dad win over the fussy eaters once and for all.

Build up the hype

Hype

As you’re getting ready, talk about how great breakfast is going to be. “Oh man! You’re going to get to eat cereal! You’re going to drink orange juice!” The kids will think it’s silly, but they’ll be a lot more excited when they sit down at the table.

Make breakfast easy

Feeding the kids easily can be a challenge. Breakfast is arguably the most important meal of the day, and while you may be rushed in the morning, it’s no occassion to skip. Consider quick, tasty meals, such as cereal, porridge or even fresh fruit for easy and healthy options.

Make breakfast fun

Shapes

Let’s face it — sitting down to eat a meal is kind of boring. Even a little bit of entertainment, like some music, can make a breakfast easier to get through.

Toast in the shape of your kids favorite cartoon character or a banana dipped in oats and are also a great easy way to introduce solids.

Speed is the name of the game

Make breakfast quick

By preparing breakfast the night before, you can keep the process speedy and ensure everyone gets to school and work on time. Not all meals keep well over night, so this may take some planning.

Make breakfast a family affair

Family time

Consider involving your kids in the meal preparation. Picky eaters are more likely to eat something they make themselves. Note: This can be messy, but the family bonding is worth it.

Add a splash of creativity

Being creative at breakfast

After a while the same old bowl of cereal or porridge may not cut it anymore for your little ones. Add an element of creativity to the mix by adding blue berries or chocolate chips to toast or sprucing up boring yogurt with some fresh fruit.

Stand your ground – No substitutions

stand your ground

While it’s good for a dad to be flexible, sometimes, you have to stand firm. Don’t give in if your child asks for a different kind of cereal, or for juice in a different cup. If you give them an inch, they’ll take breakfast over.

Add a sense of adventure

You were always taught it’s not polite to play with your food, but adding a sense of adventure to your morning ritual is sure to spark some interest from the kiddos. Use themed plates – it’s a lot harder to refuse oatmeal when Batman is on your bowl. Get your kids cups and plates that feature their favorite characters. When it comes to getting kids to eat, it’s all about presentation.

Make it to-go

On the go

No time for breakfast? Nonsense. A to-go meal works just as good as sitting around the table each morning. Some dry cereal, granola bars and even fruit cups work great in the car or on the go.
