Cycling is one of the best outdoor activities you can do as a family. It offers excellent exercise, allows you to explore new places, teaches your little ones about leading an active lifestyle, and it’s good for the environment.
If you’re riding with a baby or toddler, you’re faced with the choice between a child bike seat and a child bike trailer. If you’ve got more than one child, or the thought of your young child sitting up high on a bike is a bit scary, child bike trailers are your best bet.
Although most look broadly similar, there are a number of things to consider when purchasing a child bike trailer. So we’ve put this guide together to give you everything you need to know before deciding if a trailer is for you, and our reviews of the best 12 bike trailers for you to buy.
What are the features of a child bike trailer?
If you’ve never seen a child bike trailer, imagine a motorbike sidecar that attaches to the back of a bike with fabric covers.
Much like child bike seats, trailers aren’t limited by age. Experts recommend that a child can only be seated safely in a trailer when they can sit up on their own, without assistance from cushions or pillows. The upper limit is determined by weight, with models varying quite considerably from as little as 25kg (roughly ages 7-9) up to 45-50kg.
Child bike trailers - key features and price brackets
There are three main price brackets - budget, mid-range and luxury. While each price bracket has a varying degree of features, they all have the basics in common. They have a metal frame, two wheels towards the rear, one or two seats with harnesses, fabric covers, a mesh zip front, and attach to the bike at the rear axle via a long, articulated arm.
Here’s a handy breakdown of what features you can expect from each price bracket. Please note these are a guide and take into consideration the majority of the market. Some manufacturers are now offering typically high-end features on budget models, but lack significantly in quality by comparison.

“These features for that price makes it a no brainer!”

It comes with 20” wheels and metal rims, full suspension, waterproof coating, storage and can be converted to a stroller. However, what it offers in features, it lacks in overall quality and comfort with hammock seating and no padding.

Child bike trailers - your questions answered
Child bike trailers are fitted to the axle of the rear wheel, so theoretically a trailer can fit most, if not all, bikes. However, in practice, road bikes and small-wheeled folding bikes won’t be the best options if you’re going to be towing anything between 35-60kg. The light frame and thin tyres of a road bike and the upright position of folding bikes aren’t going to lend themselves well to generating the power and traction needed to pull the trailer.
Cycling with two child bike seats is possible, but it’s certainly not practical. Two-seater trailers are available and they’re a lot easier to ride with, making them the ideal choice for larger families or a parent who likes to take out the children on their own.
1. Space - whether you’ve got one seat or two, trailers offer plenty of space and won’t leave your children feeling cramped. Younger ones may even like to bring some toys for the ride.
2. Battling the weather - Rain covers and sunshades can be fitted and removed easily, unlike on a child bike seat. Higher-end models offer UV protection on windows, thicker fabric for warmth and water proofing.
3. Smooth ride - Balance is sometimes an issue for riders using child bike seats, particularly rear-mounted ones. Thanks to the articulated arm, those who use trailers find that it feels like a completely normal ride (other than the extra weight!).
4. Multipurpose - Child bike trailers can double as cargo trailers, making them ideal for eco-conscious parents who don’t want to commute or take a quick trip to the supermarket by car. For keen runners, some convert to jogging buggies, and some can even be fitted with skis.
5. Safety - For some parents, the thought of their child suspended a few feet off the ground, traveling at a relatively high speed is too much to bear. Child bike trailers solve that issue thanks to the articulated arm. It keeps the trailer upright even if the bike falls to one side, and in the unfortunate event that the trailer itself tips as well, plenty of mid and luxury-end trailers come with roll barsAre child bike trailers better than child bike seats?
Ultimately, the answer to that question comes down to your own personal needs.
For many, budget is the deciding factor, making a seat the only realistic option. For those with two or more children, a two-seater trailer is likely to be their only option. But for those who do have the budget to really choose what’s best for them, it is all about looking at what you need.
With that in mind, we’ve put this table together to help you visualise what you get from a trailer and a seat.
